Lib Dems Rejoice at Signing of EU Charter on Equalities

Thu 11th Sep 2008

Oxfordshire County Council became the first County Council in the UK to sign the EU Charter for Equality between men and women in local life after Liberal Democrat Group Leader Cllr Zoé Patrick urged this with a motion in June. Liberal Democrats in Opposition at the County Council were aware of the importance of being seen to sign up to this important Charter as much work was going on behind the scenes.

Conservatives Refuse to Face Criticism

Wed 10th Sep 2008

The Tories were so afraid of a Lib Dem motion on education for 14-19 year olds that when it came to Council in June they talked so much that the meeting ran out of time before the motion was taken. "There was a deliberate attempt to extend earlier business quite unnecessarily," said Jean Fooks, Liberal Democrat Shadow Cabinet member for Children & Young People, who tabled the motion. "A named vote was requested on a totally non-controversial motion, thus wasting a lot of time, and so my potentially embarrassing motion was postponed."

Tories Reject Community Proposals

Wed 10th Sep 2008

Liberal Democrat finance spokesperson, Cllr Alan Armitage, has attacked the Tories for being mean and unimaginative with their money, preferring to put it in the County's already full coffers rather than spend it on worthwhile community projects.

Keep Up the Good Work, say Lib Dems

Mon 1st Sep 2008

Cllr Jean Fooks, shadow cabinet member for Children & Young People, welcomed the excellent news that young people in Oxfordshire are committing fewer crimes than in previous years and compared to other places around the country. She called for this work - which is at threat of funding cuts - to continue and for the Tory County Cabinet to commit to continued funding.
